COMPETITION NAME: NEPAL SCHOOL PROJECT- ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION
TYPE: PROJECT FOR INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
TITLE: NEPRA01
LOCATION: NEPAL
YEAR: 2025
INTRODUCTION
An international competition for a modular, replicable, and earthquake-resistant school prototype, adaptable to Nepal’s diverse environmental and infrastructural conditions. Participating meant engaging with a fragile and complex context, prompting us to ethink the school as a space of protection, opportunity, and regeneration. The competition’s real value lies in offering winners the chance to help build the school through a volunteer program turning ideas into a tangible and shared human experience.
PROJECT
Nepal Resilient Architecture 01 is a modular school prototype designed to address the fragility of the Nepalese territory through an adaptive, community-oriented approach to architecture. The “01” marks the beginning of a modular strategy for school development that is open, participatory, and sustainable.
The project is built around three core principles:
- The school as an inclusive and flexible learning environment
- Culture as the enhancement of local knowledge
- Renewable energy as a tool for autonomy and sustainability
This is resilient architecture not just a response to emergency, but a driver of social transformation, capable of evolving with the community. The school spaces promote connection and shared growth, integrating natural and built elements into a unified educational ecosystem. Classrooms are arranged around a central courtyard shaded by Rhododendron arboreum, with gardens dedicated to food production and learning. Vegetation plays both a cultural and educational role: five species of rhododendron, symbolic of Nepal, strengthen the bond between nature, identity, and tradition.
Three entrances connect the school to its surroundings, guiding users toward a circular pavilion that houses the canteen, multipurpose hall, and offices. A network of thresholds links public and private areas, making the school a flexible civic space that adapts to the needs of the community and encourages participation.
The school is energy self-sufficient thanks to photovoltaic panels and a rainwater harvesting system. Passive ventilation ensures indoor comfort while minimizing the use of mechanical systems. A carefully designed plant system – including gardens, shrubs, and trees – transforms the school into a living laboratory of sustainability.
NEPRA01 is more than a school: it is a space in constant evolution, supporting conscious and resilient development hand in hand with the community it serves.
